Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving Tips

Happy & Healthy Thanksgiving Tips

First of all, if you are reading this, I want you to know how thankful I am that I get to inspire and empower you to take care of your entire well-being - mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. I truly am so grateful that I get to share what I'm passionate about and hopefully impact your life as well. :)

I thought I would share some tips to help you wherever you are enjoying this Thanksgiving holiday. Some of you may be traveling, and even so, it is important to prioritize your morning. Starting the day on the right foot sets the tone for the rest of the day. Holidays can always get a little chaotic, even for those of us who feel like we have it all under control. Our routines can get thrown off but if you remember these key things, my hope is that you feel healthy, empowered, and happy!

Tip #1: Gratitude

Instead of checking your phone right when you wake up, try taking a few deep breaths and get present to the day, realizing what a beauty it is to be breathing and to wake up another day. Start by thinking of 3 things you are grateful for - such as eyes to see out of, a roof over your head, sunshine, your family, etc.

Tip #2: Meditate

Just like going to the gym is good for the body, meditation is good for the mind.  Taking your mind to the mind gym is known to reduce stress and anxiety and can set the stage for a more peaceful day.

Tip #3: Hydrate

Upon waking, drink a tall glass of water (if not, more).  Our bodies are dehydrated first thing in the morning. Down some H2O before you go for the coffee and/or food. Oftentimes, we eat more because we are trying to get water from our food and we are really just thirsty!  Proper hydration will make sure you don’t overeat your calories, as well as help you maintain a healthy metabolism.

Tip #4: Journal

Ever since taking the Clarity Catalyst (which changed my life), I have become a huge fan of journaling first thing in the morning. It’s a great way to get my thoughts out on paper and free some precious mental real estate to be creative in other ways. It’s also a way for me to set intentions and reflect on where I am on my journey. You can journal on how you would like to honor your health goals, how you want to move your body, how you want to nourish your body today, etc.

Tip #5: Move your body

If you are able to, get some movement early in the day. Do something you love - maybe it’s gentle yoga, maybe it’s a fun HIIT workout or maybe it’s a scenic hike in nature. Choose your jam and you will feel so much better later when it comes to enjoying whatever you want for Thanksgiving dinner.

Tip #6: Don’t skip breakfast

Make sure you eat a well balanced breakfast. Prioritize protein for that first meal, like scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt, or chia pudding. Avoid the super carby breakfasts like cereals, granola, pancakes, and waffles. This will ensure you don’t start the day on the blood sugar rollercoaster, which will make you hungrier and reach for more carbs all day long.

Tip #7: Enjoy Thanksgiving!

When it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, enjoy what you want… but eat your veggies and protein first. The order in which you eat your protein, vegetables and carbs impacts your blood sugar levels. A research study has suggested eating vegetables and protein before carbohydrates in order to control insulin levels. After you enjoy some turkey and green beans, then go ahead and enjoy those mashed potatoes, yams, and/or pumpkin pie if you’d like.
